Interactive Web Idea

Being a hunter and firearm enthusiast, I would like to see a web app or program that would allow a person to attend a firearm or hunter safety class online, like we do here, but you would also attend via chat and video conference. During these classes you are required to go over the basics of firearm safety by using a real, unloaded gun. If the person had access to a gun, via another licensed person in the house, then they could use the video conferencing to their advantage. However, if they did not have access to a gun, then they would have to show up in person to the training facility and perform the handling steps in front of the instructor. Then at the end of the class people would be given their exams and they would have to move the correct answer into a box at the bottom of the question or page. At the end, the program would tally the score and tell you if you passed or failed. The test scores would be held until a person without the video conferencing capability could make an appointment with the instructor to go over the safety procedures in person. You could even go one step farther and the information could be sent to the local licensing authorities and it could be used in determining if you get a license or not. I would like to thank the people that provided their input and I would also like to say, Thanks for a great semester!

  1. I'm reposting from Blackboard:

"This is a great idea. Most of the class could be completed online. I'm not sure about the practical part of the exam. I remember when I took a hunter safety class in the 1980's, to get my FID card, we had to pick up a shotgun and show the instructor that we understood the basics. If the student lives with a licensed gun owner, and they have a shotgun or riffle on the premisses, at least in theory, they should be able to use video conferencing to show the instructor they know what they're doing. If the student doesn't have that type of access they would probably need to schedule time to complete that part of the exam in person.

I also like the idea of being able to send test scores directly to the local licensing authorities.

Again, great idea and great post!"
