Interesting Article

I was reading this article form Network World during my lunch hour at work.  I found it very interesting and amazing that the Egyptian government would go to such lengths just to stop civil uprising.  Imagine if this were ever to play out in the US?!

Not only was it interesting to read, I thought it was appropriate to blog about it in our Internet class.  There is also a link to the history of the Internet under the heading "History Lesson."

Here is the link for it Egypt Cuts Links to the Internet

  1. Tom,

When I read this article it made me realize how dependent we are on the internet and communications in general. Think about our society today and how "connected" we are with each other at a moment's notice. I looked around in one of my meetings one day and saw individual's (of importance) on their Blackberries, iPhones, and then I looked at myself as I was typing notes on my iPhone's Quick Office. (The Quick Office application is worth every penny and I use it every day.)

If you go back a couple of years I remember when cell phones were forbidden at meetings but in this day an age of technology we can communicate through email, phone, blog, facebook and even record or write notes on a phone or other small electronic device instead of a pen and paper. Do you find, in this day an age, improper to use your phone or other small electronic device for these purposes during a meeting?

  2. Hi Wayne,
I am on call 24/7, so unfortunately I have my phone with me at all times. I do find myself using it while in meetings but it is more because I have to than I want to. I do put it on vibrate to at least be courteous to the other meeting members. I do draw the line when I go on vacation. I will only answer my phone, nothing else; no emails, no texts. I one of those people that would rather not have a cell signal at all during my vacation! But I do think that using a smartphone or other device for business has become the norm. It's amazing at how fast technology has evolved to the point that just a few years ago you were asked to shutoff your cellphone but now, no one seems to notice.
